Leoncavallo_ Pagliacci / G. Puccini_ Il Tabarro (4.6~4.9)

2 (2)

Dramatic view to wretched life towards death

Two master pieces of verismo opera are performed on one stage. Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci and Puccini’s Il Tabarro are the two supreme verismo operas with realistic analysis, sharp psychological description, and dramatic but moderate music. Both productions present special experiences of alternations between fantasy and reality on stage. Pagliacci, renowned for its “play within a play”, is about a clown Canio who confuses the reality to a play and commits murder. In Il Tabarro, the music balances in harmony as the story deals with the death of a child, wife’s affair, and husband’s murder. The highly condensed music truly connects the direct delineation of the story that is almost too tragic.

Seocho-gu’s time-honored Buddhist shrine, Daeseongsa Temple

Seocho-gu office recently offered a great opportunity, ‘Global Seocho Culture Experience’ for foreigners to learn and experience Korean culture.

Daeseongsa Temple was the first stop. It is a relaxing and calming place where you can recharge your batteries. After walking around the temple, you can also see the performance at Seoul Arts Center located at the front of the temple.

When you walk inside, there is a temple office. Sugak(mineral spring) and Pohwadaesang are in front of the main building, Daeungjeon Hall.

It is a story about Daesungsa Temple. An Indian monk Marananta arrived in Baekje to firstly introduce Buddhism. However he fell ill with a disease while traveling because of different food and climate. He was recovered from the disease after he had drank water from the mineral spring in the temple and could stay well. After that, many people have visited and drank the water to be healed from their illness.

Above is the main building of the temple, Daeungjeon Hall. The Buddhist painting on the wall is ‘Simudo’ and each picture shows one story.

It looks luxurious inside and it has quiet and comfortable atmosphere at the same time. There is a place for people to pray.

A seated wooden statue of Buddha has been designated as tangible cultural properties.

It was originally made of wood in late Joseon dynasty and becomes the present form plated with gold as time passes.

Pohwadaesang is at the front of the main building.

As the story goes, anyone who makes a wish rubbing lower abdomen three time from right to left can carry out the wish.

Anyone who laughs like Pohwadaesang can get good fortune of good health, long life and wealth.

Here, a monk Marananta was healed from disease after he had drank water. Now it is available to all to drink like mineral spring.

Stone pagoda and stone Buddha are located at the front and back of the main hall.

You can see the whole view of Seoul.

On a fine day, you can even see N seoul tower in Namsan Mountain.

It is perfect place to enjoy the view and relax in the center of the city.

If you want, you can buy a roof tile (price: 10,000 won) from office and write your wishes on that.

Since 2017 is only two months away, it would be a great idea to make wishes on it to achieve or to make good memory when you visit.

A production of “Pericles” will be staged at the Seoul Arts Center from Nov 10 to Dec 4. While the authorship of “Pericles” may forever remain a mystery, the play, which is most commonly attributed to William Shakespeare, continues to be an ever-present fixture in many theatre companies. “Pericles,” which is divided into five acts, revolves chiefly around the adventures and occasional misfortunes of the eponymous protagonist, the young Prince of Tyre, in present-day Lebanon.

The play opens with a riddle proposed by Antiochus, who has offered his daughter’s hand in marriage to anyone who can solve the confounding puzzle, and a painful death to those who answer incorrectly. While Pericles instantaneously understands the meaning behind the seemingly unsolvable question, he flees in fear for his life, which inevitably sets off a chain of events that will see him on the shores of various faraway kingdoms and aboard ships caught in howling tempests. Esteemed actor and former Minister of Culture and Tourism Yu In-chon will take on the leading role of Pericles.

11월 서초구3.jpg

is is one of Canada’s best-loved comedies.

It is going to be performed its first premiere directed by Gu Taehwan in SAC of Korea.

It is structured around what happens when an extremely self-centred and shallow person finds himself, through his own errors and inattentiveness, in a life-and-death situation with profound and far-reaching consequences. A play of twisted circumstance, mistaken identity and surprising turns, it is deliciously absurd, incredibly funny and poignantly tender.

‘A Song of Strings’ (11.10~11.20)

11월 서초구4.jpg

Author Kim Hoon’s novel “Song of Strings” is reiterated as a gugak drama. Kim Hoon’s novels are well-known for telling stories through connotative words, hence the show is drawing in interest on how it would put the words into traditional music.

The story revolves around the creation of a Korean instrument, gayageum, believed to have been created in Gaya around the sixth century, while it was in the middle of its 200-year-long war with Silla. Through various developments made over centuries after centuries, we now have the current gayageum, one of the most representative instruments of traditional Korean music.
